In Delhi, daughters’ education is often interrupted due to financial constraints. For many families, school to college fees, books and other expenses become a big burden. In this background, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana 2026’. The objective of this scheme is clear, no daughter’s education should stop before graduation due to lack of money.

What is Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana?

Under this scheme, the Delhi government will deposit a total of Rs 56,000 in the bank account of the daughter at different stages from her birth till the completion of her degree. This amount will be safe in the Aadhaar-linked account and interest will also continue to be accrued on it. When the daughter completes 21 years of age and completes her graduation or diploma, she will receive a maturity amount of more than Rs 1 lakh including interest. Its objective is not only to provide financial assistance but also to secure the future of daughters.

  • The annual income of the family should be less than Rs 1.20 lakh.
  • The child must have been born in Delhi (birth certificate mandatory).

Application Process: Fully Digital

The government has claimed to make this scheme completely digital. From April 1, 2026, online application can be made on the official portal of Women and Child Development Department (WCD Delhi) of Delhi Government. With this, parents will not have to visit government offices and the process will remain transparent.

Why is this scheme important?

Education is not just a degree, but the first step to self-reliance. In low-income families, daughters’ education is often the first to be affected. Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana, along with long-term financial security, also gives the message that the government considers daughters’ education as an investment, not an expense.

However, the real success of the scheme will depend on its implementation, transparency and timely payments. In the future, it remains to be seen how many daughters benefit from this and whether this initiative actually reduces the dropout rate. At present, this is being considered an important policy step for daughters in Delhi.
