Chinese delivery boy
Today, the biggest challenge before the whole world is to create employment. All countries including India are working on this, but it is surprising that even a powerful and developed country like China is not untouched by this. A recent news from China has revealed the serious condition of unemployment there. The case of Ding Yuanjhao, living in Beijing has become a matter of discussion across the country.
Masters from Oxford
Ding Yuanjhao scored almost the perfect score in China’s most difficult exam Gaocao. He did graduation in Chemistry from Singhua University, Master in Energy Engineering from Peking University, PhD in Biology from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and then Masters in biodiversity from Oxford University. Despite such a spectacular educational record, Ding is working on food delivery on Beijing’s streets today.
Their case represents millions of youth of China who are struggling for jobs even after studying from good institutions. Traditional and stable jobs are now decreasing there. In compulsion, these youth are connecting with Gig economy such as taxi service, delivery boy or temporary work.
China got expensive by America-India
China’s economy is going through many pressures at this time. Business and technical disputes with the US and Western countries, the proxy war against India, and the global supply chain have shook its economy. The decline in foreign investment and the decrease in exports have further increased unemployment.
According to China’s National Statistics Bureau, the unemployment rate among youth between 16 to 24 years was 14.9% in May 2025. This shows that there has been a big difference between the education system and the employment market. The case of Ding is not just a story, but a sign of deep flaws of China’s economic system.
