You must have noticed that some people start having yellow spots around their eyes. This problem becomes more common with increasing age. But have you wondered what this is and why it happens? Is this an eye disease or some other problem? Let us know about this from experts.
Dr. Ajit Jain in the Cardiology Department at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Delhi, says that seeing yellow spots around the eyes can in many cases be a sign of some serious health problem going on inside the body. These yellow spots are actually cholesterol. In medical language these are called xanthelasma. Xanthelasma occurs when cholesterol starts accumulating around the eyes and under the skin. This simply means that bad cholesterol is increasing in the body. In many cases, this is also a sign of deterioration in the lipid profile. Which can also be dangerous for the heart.
According to Dr. Jain, if yellow patches are seen around the eyes then it should not be considered as any skin disease. This could be an early sign of heart disease.
What to do if yellow spots appear?
Dr. Jain tells that if this is a problem then first of all you should consult the doctor.
Lipid profile test should be done. Especially if your age is more than 40 years, then definitely get tested.
Is this disease dangerous?
Xanthelasma itself is not dangerous, but it can cause heart disease, so it is important not to take it lightly. Many researches have found that people who have this problem may have a higher risk of heart attack in the future.
