Falgun Amavasya Puja Method: Amavasya of Phalgun month is considered a very sacred date in Hindu religion for spiritual purification and blessings of ancestors. This new moon falling on 17 February 2026 has become even more impressive this time due to it being accompanied by a solar eclipse. In the scriptures, Phalgun Amavasya is considered the gateway to happiness, peace and salvation, because it marks the confluence of the end of winter and the arrival of spring. On this day, taking bath in holy rivers and meditating with full devotion relieves a person’s mental stress and brings new energy into life.
Auspicious time and auspicious time for bathing and donating
To get good results on Phalgun Amavasya, it is very important to pay attention to the auspicious time. This year, Amavasya Tithi will start from the evening of 16th February and will continue till the afternoon of 17th February 2026, hence according to Udayatithi, it is considered best to take bath and donate on 17th February only. Brahma Muhurta, i.e. the time before sunrise, is best for bathing, because at this time special positive energy is present in the water. If you cannot go to any holy river, then you can take bath at home by mixing Ganga water in the bath water. There is a tradition of donating immediately after bathing, which should be completed between sunrise and noon.

On this auspicious date, the Tarpan and Shraddha performed for the peace of the ancestors is considered very important for the progress of the dynasty. After morning bath, offer water to the Sun God and then complete the process of tarpan by taking sesame seeds and water in your hand while remembering your ancestors. Worship of Lord Vishnu and Shiva also has special significance on this day. Light a ghee lamp in the temple and chant Gayatri Mantra peacefully. Due to the effect of eclipse, this time during the puja, only mental meditation and chanting of mantras will be more fruitful. This puja method stabilizes your mind and helps you in proper conduct of life.
Donation items and rules and precautions of Amavasya
On the day of Amavasya, the reward of charity increases infinitely, hence one must help the needy as per one’s capacity. Donating white items like rice, milk, sugar or silver on this day is very auspicious for mental peace, also donating black sesame seeds and warm clothes is helpful in getting rid of Pitra Dosh. Keep in mind that on this day, do not allow any kind of discord or dispute in the house, because negative energy can reduce the effect of puja. Eat satvik food and follow celibacy and spend most of your time in charity and meditation of God.
