After a ‘mysterious illness’ killed around 20 people in two months in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu declared a health emergency on Friday in Guntur district, directing an investigation by high-level medical teams.
A team led by Dr. Raghunandan, Director of Medical Education, visited the Turakapalem village to investigate the mysterious deaths in the region, according to health officials.
Chief Minister Naidu advised people suffering from any unexplained illness to seek hospital admission.
He further instructed that health camps should be conducted in the village on Saturday and Sunday, adding that everyone should get their medical tests done, including kidney function, blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Naidu asked the authorities to prepare health profiles of the locals.
For effective investigation and better results, he has advised the health officials to seek help from the AIIMS Mangalagiri and international medical experts if needed.
What is possibly causing the illness?
After the investigation was launched, the officials suspected a bacterial infection, known as Melioidosis. However, it is only based on the preliminary lab reports.
Melioidosis is a bacterial infection that spreads mainly during the monsoon seasons and at times of flooding. While it is a serious infection, it can be treated with antibiotics.
Moreover, the symptoms include fever and cough, but can further cause severe lung damage.
According to the officials, most of the victims are men around 55 years of age, who are suffering from pre-existing health issues.
“Officials should be vigilant 24/7 as there is a high possibility for the spread of the suspected bacterial disease through drinking water, food items, and through the air.
Additionally, CM Naidu has directed the health officials to supply protected drinking water in the village.
