Dhaka: A day before the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is all set to form government in Bangladesh, Muhammed Yunus, the head of country’s interim government, announced his resignation on Monday.
Addressing the countrymen in his farewell speech, Yunus urged the countrymen to continue safeguarding the democracy that was reopened during the transition period. The Interim Government was formed in Bangladesh after the downfall of the Awami League Government in 2024, after massive protests, and then PM Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country.
Resignation paves the way for the formation on BNP Govt
“Today, the interim government is stepping down. But let the practice of democracy, freedom of speech, and fundamental rights that has begun not be halted,” news agency AFP quoted him as saying. His resignation has paved way for the BNP to form the government under Tarique Rahman, who is all set to take oath as PM on Tuesday.
Several foreign dignitaries are expected to participate at the event. India will be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The BNP had earlier invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the event.
New Govt to break past traditions
Breaking the past traditions, the swearing-in ceremony of the 60-year-old BNP leader will be held at the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex rather than Bangabhaban. Rahman and members of his cabinet will be administered the oath of office by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The oath ceremony will be held at 4 pm, officials said.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin would administer the oath of office to all newly elected MPs earlier in the day. As per the press release shared by JS Secretariat, all 297 MPs will “first take oath as the members of parliament (MPs) and then as the members of the Constitutional Reform Council.”
