Heart attack and anger connection
There are many reasons for a heart attack, but do you know that getting angry again and again can be dangerous for your heart health. America’s prestigious institution Johns Hopkins University Research has shown that the risk of heart attack can increase by almost 5 times in the two hours after getting suddenly angry. According to a research published in the European Heart Journal in 2014, the more anger comes and the more frequently it comes, the more dangerous it is for the heart.
Research has shown that angry men can have an attack even if they do not have any heart disease compared to men who are not angry. This happens due to sudden intense anger.
What is the connection between anger and heart attack?
Research has shown that during anger, a stress hormone called catecholamines increases rapidly in the body. These are the same hormones which rapidly increase BP in the body. BP increases due to stress and with increase in BP the risk of heart attack increases.
According to research expert Dr. Ilan Wittstein, sudden increase in stress hormones during anger causes broken heart syndrome, which can lead to attack. This type of risk has been seen more in men.
How was the research done?
In the research from Johns Hopkins Medicine, more than 1,300 men were tracked for three decades. Among these, those who got angry more often had more cases of heart disease and attack, whereas the risk of attack was seen less in those who got angry less or did not get angry. Those who were very angry had up to 5 times more risk of heart attack even without any pre-existing serious disease. Research has shown that just like high cholesterol, serious heart disease, history of heart disease, anger is also a major risk factor for heart attack. In such a situation, people who get angry a lot need to control it.
