A Center of Faith Amidst Boiling Lava
Mount Bromo, located in East Java, is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. For the local Tenggerese community, it is not just a mountain but a sacred site. At the edge of the crater sits an ancient idol of Lord Ganesha, known as Anadi Ganesh.
Though there are no historical records of its installation, scholars believe the idol was placed there in the 14th century, when Hinduism had a strong presence in Indonesia. Even though religions and rulers changed over time, the people’s faith in this idol never faded.
Vighnaharta, the Protector from Destruction
Over the centuries, Mount Bromo has erupted several times, spewing lava and ash that threatened nearby villages. Yet locals believe their prayers to Lord Ganesha, also known as Vighnaharta (the remover of obstacles), keep the volcano’s fury under control.
Every year, during the traditional festival Yadnya Kasada, devotees climb to the crater and offer fruits, vegetables, flowers, and rice to Lord Ganesha by throwing them directly into the volcano. This ritual symbolizes their faith that Ganesha will protect them in return.
A Symbol of Unity and Harmony
What makes this idol even more special is that it is respected not just by Hindus but also by Muslims and people of other religions in Indonesia. Locals see it as part of their cultural heritage, a symbol of harmony that unites people across faiths.
For centuries, this Ganesha idol has stood as a guardian of life and faith, sending a timeless message of peace, unity, and global brotherhood.
