India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue in a multi-nation tournament for the first time in his career in the 2025 Asia Cup.
Suyakumar, who pipped Hardik Pandya for captaincy, will aim to leave an impact before the 2026 T20 World Cup. India will enter the Asia Cup and the T20 WC as defending champions and the pressure will be on Suryakumar to lead the Men in Blue to success in both tournaments.
Before Suryakumar’s first game as captain in the Asia Cup, Monty Panesar predicted a bold move by the Indian selectors if they fail to perform well in the Asia Cup. Speaking to India TV, the former England spinner predicted that the selectors might move on from Suryakumar and hand over captaincy to Shubman Gill.
“Shubman Gill has great potential to captain India in all three formats. If Suryakumar Yadav doesn’t perform well in T20s or fails to win the Asia Cup, I think the selectors may move on from him and hand the white-ball captaincy to Gill. Once Rohit Sharma steps aside, it’s very likely that Gill will lead across formats,” he told India TV.
Shubman made his return to the T20I team as the vice-captain. He joined the leadership group in white-ball cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was appointed Rohit Sharma’s deputy before the Sri Lanka tour. He was India’s vice-captain in the 2025 Champions Trophy as well.
Will Shubman become next all-format captain?
Shubman can become India’s all-format captain in the next couple of years. He replaced Rohit as the Test captain after his retirement from the longest format of the game.
He is already India’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket and is on the course to become the all-format captain. Shubman captains Gujarat Titans in IPL. He has led India in 5 T20Is and as many Tests so far.
