Bobby Deol’s amazing de-aging technique in ‘Alpha’ is in the news. With the help of AI and VFX, he was shown in a youthful avatar, which was greatly appreciated by the audience.
Yash Raj Films’ action entertainer film ‘Alpha’ is performing brilliantly in theaters across the world. The film starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari has so far collected over Rs 92.75 crore at the global box office. The film remains the audience’s favorite due to its strong action, exciting story and brilliant visual presentation.
However, amid the success of the film, the aspect that has caught most people’s attention is the very realistic de-aging look of actor Bobby Deol. In an important part of the film, he has been shown in his young avatar during his early career i.e. ‘Soldier’, ‘Gupt’ and ‘Barsaat’, which has been liked a lot by the audience.
Alpha Movie VFX: YFX Studios creates realistic de-aging effect
The work of showcasing Bobby Deol’s youthful look on screen has been done by Yash Raj Films’ in-house YFX Studios. The purpose of this technique was not just to showcase modern VFX, but to make the story more emotionally impactful. The studio created the visuals in such a way that the audience felt as if they were actually watching the character during his life.
Director Shiv Rawail: Story, not technology, was most important
The film’s director Shiv Rawail says that from the beginning, the objective of de-aging was not just a technical demonstration. He said that every creative decision was taken to strengthen the story. According to him, the audience should completely believe that they are watching the character at a particular stage of his life. If the experience did not feel natural, the emotional impact would also be weakened. He told that the biggest challenge of the entire team was to ensure that the technology remained behind the scenes and the audience’s attention remained focused only on the story and the acting of the actors.
Bobby Deol De-Aging: What did the actor say after seeing himself in such a young form for the first time?
Bobby Deol described this experience as a very special moment of his career. He said that seeing the effect of years disappearing from his face was a completely new experience for him. According to him, he has played many different characters in his career, but this is the first time he has seen the use of such technology. This made him realize how rapidly filmmaking technology had advanced. Bobby also said that technology definitely helps the actor, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the actor to portray the emotions of any character truthfully.
World-class de-aging effect created by a combination of AI and VFX
Sherry Bharda, Principal and VFX Supervisor, YFX Studios, said that today’s audience is very conscious about visual effects. Therefore, his effort was to make the entire de-aging effect look so natural that the technology was not visible. He told that for the first time, AI and VFX were used jointly in the entire sequence on a large scale. The process was quite challenging due to the limited footage of Bobby Deol’s early days.
According to Sherry, just making the face look young is not enough. It is important to maintain the skin, wrinkles, eye expression and small details of the face in the same way. AI-based de-aging is often a problem with ‘dead eyes’, so the team adopted a hybrid model of AI and artists’ expertise, maintaining complete quality and control over every frame.
YRF VFX Studios: Using technology to enhance storytelling
This de-aging work done in ‘Alpha’ is considered to be a big achievement for YFX Studios of Yash Raj Films. This shows that the studio is continuously investing in world-class filmmaking techniques and using every technological innovation only for the purpose of making the story more impactful. Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail, ‘Alpha’ stars Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. The film is currently being screened successfully in theaters across the world.
