Rural electrification in Uttar Pradesh has improved electricity supply in villages. Door-to-door connections, farming and employment have benefited from government schemes. The pace of growth has been accelerated by new sub-stations, smart metering and strong distribution network.

Lucknow. Before the year 2017, many villages of Uttar Pradesh were suffering from lack of electricity, but now the situation has changed a lot. Yogi Adityanath government has achieved the target of providing electricity to every household in a planned manner by making rural electrification the foundation of development. Now door-to-door electricity connections are available in most of the villages. A provision of Rs 65,926 crore has been proposed for the power sector in Budget 2026-27.

Deen Dayal Gram Jyoti Yojana: Focus on strengthening electricity network

Under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, transmission and distribution networks in rural areas were strengthened. Old and dilapidated lines were replaced, new sub-stations were built and power supply arrangements were improved. Due to this, the availability of electricity in villages has improved significantly compared to before.

Har Ghar Bijli Yojana: Rural lifestyle changed with free connection

Lakhs of families got free electricity connections through Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana. Now, not only the lighting of houses in the villages, but also agriculture, small industries and small businesses are getting electricity continuously, due to which economic activities have increased.

Distribution Reform Scheme: Smart Meters and Strong Infrastructure

The rural distribution system is being further strengthened under the revised distribution sector improvement scheme. Old conductors are being replaced, low-tension AB cables are being laid and the capacity of transformers is being increased. With the implementation of smart metering, electricity theft is being prevented and the quality of supply has improved. This has also reduced the problem of low voltage.

Positive impact of electricity on farming, employment, education and health

With rural electrification, farmers are getting better electricity for irrigation, which has increased crop production. Dairy, cold storage, flour mill, welding and other small industries have benefited. The quality of education and health services has improved due to availability of electricity in schools and health centres. The government believes that strong villages are the cornerstone of overall development.

24 hour power supply and expansion of new sub-stations

In the financial year 2025-26, an average of 20 hours of power supply was ensured in rural areas, 22 hours at tehsil headquarters and 24 hours at district headquarters till December 2025. From April 1, 2022 to 2025-26, 2,410 new 33/11 KV substations were created or their capacity was increased. Also, 20,924 new distribution transformers were installed and the capacity of 85,684 transformers was increased.
