New Delhi: Walmart-owned company Flipkart is planning to venture into food delivery business. If the plans materialise, it would mean a big competition for Zomato and Swiggy. Media reports stated that Flipkart, an e-commerce giant, may start its food delivery pilot project from Bengaluru in the May or June this year. The company will start with a trail run and if things move as per the plan, Flipkart may launch its food delivery service across the country by the end of this year or early 2027.
Flipkart management is contemplating on how to create a distinct identity in this already crowded market. Sources within the firm said the plans are to carve out their own niche in the market.
Flipkart’s plan to enter India’s huge Food Delivery Market
Flipkart is planning how it will deliver food to the destinations. Reports suggest that the company’s officials are pondering over two options – one, whether they should move ahead by partnering with the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), or, build their own independent platform.
Interestingly, Flipkart had earlier planned to enter the food delivery sector through ONDC, however, things did not materialise. Flipkart has also started forming a dedicated team for this new vertical, which reflects that the company is serious about foraying into food delivery business.
India’s food delivery market is growing rapidly. In FY2025, this market was estimated at around $9 billion. Jefferies projects this market to grow to $25 billion by 2030.
Currently, the market is dominated by Swiggy and Zomato. Rapido and ONDC have a very small share. Flipkart is already giving a tough competition to Blinkit and Zepto. The company is investing heavily in its quick commerce vertical, ‘Flipkart Minutes’. It currently has more than 800 dark stores (distribution centers), and plans to increase this number further in the coming months. Before its IPO launch, Flipkart wants to establish itself as a “super app.”
