Pune doctors witness sharp rise in women enquiring about egg freezing

Pune doctors are observing a spike in enquiries about egg freezing. Many women in their late 20s-35s are coming forward, seeking clarity on the process, benefits, and suitability.

Experts call it a positive shift, as egg freezing gives women the option to plan motherhood according to their personal and professional timelines. Now, it is seen as a practical tool to preserve fertility and reduce age-related risks.

Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is a procedure where a woman’s eggs are collected, frozen, and stored for future use. When a woman is ready to conceive, these eggs can be thawed, fertilised with sperm, and implanted in the uterus.

Dr Preethika Shetty, consultant – Obstetrician, Gynecologist & Infertility specialist, Motherhood Hospitals in Kharadi explains, “We have seen a clear increase in women coming to us with detailed questions about egg freezing. It is the women in their late 20s and 30s who are enquiring about egg freezing. Many women are career-focused, want to prioritize education, or simply wait for the right time to start a family, or are in a long-distance marriage. Some also come because of a family history of fertility issues or any medical condition like low ovarian reserve or a history of early menopause that can affect their fertility or reproductive health. Women commonly ask about the success rate and side effects of the procedure. Many are proactively seeking consultations, which is a healthy sign. What is encouraging is that women now see egg freezing not just as a backup option but as a way to take control of their fertility and ease the pressure of the biological clock, allowing them to plan motherhood on their own terms.”

Dr Rashmi Niphadkar, fertility specialist, Nova IVF Fertility in Baner says, “Women with medical conditions affecting fertility, those undergoing cancer treatment, or those who wish to delay pregnancy due to personal or career reasons may consider it. Ideally, it is most effective when done before the age of 35. The egg freezing technique preserves fertility potential at a younger, healthier age, offers flexibility in planning family life, and reduces pressure to rush into motherhood due to age concerns. Changing lifestyles, rising awareness, and medical advancements have encouraged more women to take charge of their reproductive health. Social media and celebrity endorsements have also brought egg freezing into mainstream discussion. Monthly, 6 out of 10 women aged 25-35 visiting us for regular reproductive health check-ups enquire about the egg freezing procedure. There is a 60% rise in queries related to egg freezing. Earlier, due to low awareness, in the previous year, 2-3 women on a monthly basis would ask about this novel egg freezing technique. The demand for egg freezing is also expected to rise in the upcoming years due to awareness and the future hope of conceiving and starting a family. We have also conducted various interactive sessions of egg freezing for those women who are interested in going ahead with the procedure in the future.”
