Story of Vijaya Ekadashi (Story of Vijaya Ekadashi)
According to the story, Lord Rama went to the forest for 14 years to keep the promise of his father Dasharatha. Along with him, mother Sita and brother Lakshman also went for exile. Lord Ram started living with Sita and Lakshman in Panchavati in the forest. While living there, Ravana abducted Lord Shri Ram’s wife Mother Sita. Lord Ram became very distressed by this. He started searching here and there in the forest for Mother Sita.
As they moved ahead, Shri Ram and Lakshman met Jatayu. He told them that Ravana had abducted Mother Sita. After this he became friends with Sugriva and a huge army of monkeys was collected for the work of Shri Ram. Later Hanuman ji went to Lanka and met Mother Sita. Returning from there, Hanuman ji narrated the entire situation of Lanka to Lord Shri Ramchandra.
After this, Shri Ram discussed with Sugriva and decided to attack Lanka, but the biggest obstacle in his path was the huge ocean flowing in it. The sea was very deep and full of aquatic creatures. When no way was found to cross the sea, Lakshman ji told Lord about a sage named Bakdalbhya, whose ashram was at a distance of half a yojana from the sea shore.
Hearing Lakshman’s words, Lord Ram reached the ashram of Bakdalbhya Muni. Then after paying obeisance to him, he asked him the way to cross the ocean. Then the sage told Lord Rama about the Ekadashi fast falling in the Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month and its virtuous effects. He also told the Lord that due to the virtuous effects of this fast, you will not only be able to cross the ocean, but you will also get victory over Ravana.
As per the advice of the sage, Shri Ram observed the fast of Vijaya Ekadashi and with its influence he was successful in crossing the ocean along with his army. Also emerged victorious in the war. He killed Ravana and got mother Sita back. This is the reason why Ekadashi falling in Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is called Vijaya Ekadashi.
