Lucknow. The ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) scheme launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emerged as a medium of major change in the economy of Uttar Pradesh. This initiative, started in the year 2018, has given a new identity to traditional artisans and local products. The government has so far provided free training and tool kits to 1,31,000 artisans. Besides, under the Chief Minister Accident Insurance Scheme, artisans are also being given insurance protection cover of up to Rs 5 lakh.

Traditional products got encouragement

State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Khadi and Village Industries, Silk Industry, Handloom and Textiles Minister Rakesh Sachan informed in the budget session 2026-27 that this scheme is playing an important role in empowering traditional products and artisans. He said that under the scheme, artisans are being given training, modern tool kits and financial assistance. For example, in Saharanpur district, 2275 artisans were given advanced tool kits, while margin money worth Rs 16.26 crore was distributed to 454 artisans.

More than double increase in exports

The minister said that the ODOP scheme has had a positive impact on the economy of the state. In the year 2017-18, the export of Uttar Pradesh was Rs 86 thousand crore, which has now increased to Rs 1.84 lakh crore. About 50 percent contribution in this is from ODOP and handicraft products. From 2018 till now, 3,16,000 people have got employment through this scheme.

Budget increased by Rs 200 crore

The government’s commitment is also evident from the budget allocation. A provision of Rs 145 crore was made in the last budget, out of which margin money of Rs 135 crore has been distributed. This amount has been increased to Rs 200 crore in the current financial year. Apart from this, brand recognition in the international market has been strengthened by getting GI tag for 79 products of the state.

Focus on health, education and social empowerment

The Minister said that ODOP is not only an economic scheme, but it is also a campaign for cultural and social upliftment. The artisans have been linked to health care and education facilities under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Along with this, new initiatives like ‘One District One Cuisine’ are an important step towards giving wider recognition to local products and cuisines.
