Mumbai: Singer Zayn Malik candidly spoke of his understanding of love and his relationship with Gigi Hadid. Zayn, who is mostly private, reflected on his past in an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper.
When the host asked him about his confession of never being in love, made on The Zach Sang Show in 2024, the singer stated that his views of love have evolved. “…my understanding of love is always developing. At that moment in time, I might have thought it was love, but as I’ve got older, I’ve realised maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was lust,” said the singer. However, he added that he will always love his former partner, Gigi.
“I will always love G because she’s the reason my child is on this earth. And I have the utmost respect for her… But I don’t know if I was ever in love with her,” he said. He concluded, “I do love her a crazy amount, but no, I don’t think I was in love with her.”

During the interview, Zayn also touched upon his past mistakes. “You tend to get in trouble in relationships because I was young and did certain things, spoke to other females when I shouldn’t have been, as most people do,” said former One Direction member. He added, “You live and learn from it. But this way, there’s no guilt. I can just be free and speak to whoever I want.”
The singer also revealed that he likes being single.
“I don’t find being alone scary. I’m cool with myself,” said the former band singer. He added that his life as a parent and his demanding career made it difficult for him to date.

Zayn was in a relationship with Gigi for six years. The couple started dating in 2015. They share a daughter named Khai.
