Irrigation, water resources, Namami Gange and Jal Jeevan Mission have been given great priority in the Uttar Pradesh Budget 2026-27. The budget will increase agricultural productivity, provide clean drinking water to rural families and strengthen flood management.
Lucknow. The state government has made large and important provisions for the irrigation, water resources and rural water supply sectors in the budget for the financial year 2026-27. This budget is the tenth budget of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath government, which was presented in the Assembly. Special priority has been given to agricultural development, water conservation and rural infrastructure facilities in the budget.
Provision of Rs 18,290 crore for irrigation and flood control schemes
A provision of Rs 18,290 crore has been made in the budget for the financial year 2026-27 for irrigation and flood control schemes. This amount is about 30 percent more than the previous financial year 2025-26. This increased budget will help in strengthening the irrigation facilities in the state and making the flood management system more effective.
Rs 22,676 crore for Namami Gange and rural water supply
About Rs 22,676 crore has been proposed in the budget for Namami Gange scheme and rural water supply. This amount will be used to keep river Ganga pollution free and provide clean drinking water in rural areas.
The Finance Minister said that a total of 74 projects related to sewerage have been approved to clean the Ganga. Of these, 41 projects are completed and operational, while the remaining projects are under construction. With these efforts, the flow of contaminated water in Ganga will be stopped and the cleanliness of the river will be ensured.
Budgetary provision of Rs 22,452 crore under Jal Jeevan Mission
A provision of approximately Rs 22,452 crore has been made for all components of Jal Jeevan Mission in the financial year 2026-27. A target has been set to provide functional home tap connections to a total of 2.67 crore rural families in the state, against which till now tap water supply has been provided to 2.43 crore houses.
Major irrigation projects will increase irrigation capacity.
The Finance Minister said in the budget speech that the major projects of the government include-
- Madhyaganga Stage-2 Project
- Kanhar Irrigation Project
- Ken-Betwa Link Project
- Bhaurat Dam Project
Whose work is in progress rapidly. Upon completion of these projects, new irrigation potential will be created in 4.49 lakh hectare area.
Irrigation capacity of 1.62 lakh hectares restored by construction of tube wells
To expand the irrigation capacity in the state, construction of 2100 new state tube wells and reconstruction of 569 failed tube wells located in the dark zone have been completed in the financial year 2025-26. Through these works, irrigation potential of about 1.62 lakh hectare area has been restored and more than 1.43 lakh farmer families have been benefited.
Relief to millions of people from flood control projects
Referring to the government’s progress towards flood control, it was said that 285 flood control projects were completed in the financial year 2025-26, which directly benefited 49.09 lakh population. Along with this, 11,065 km long drains were cleaned, thereby strengthening the drainage system and reducing the problem of waterlogging.

The budgetary provisions of the Department of Irrigation and Water Resources reflect the strong commitment of the Government towards increasing agricultural productivity, providing safe drinking water to rural families and environmental protection in Uttar Pradesh. This emphasis given on proper management of water resources will play an important role in the overall development of the state.
