The habit of eating sweets after meals is very common among Indians. You must have heard from many people that, “It would have been fun if I had got something sweet”. Some people reduce their craving for sweet food by eating chocolate, some sweets, some halwa and some only by eating jaggery. But amidst changing lifestyle, increasing stress and decreasing physical activity, this habit also raises many questions. Is eating sweets after every meal really good for the body or not?

Is the habit of eating sweets daily good or not?
Holistic dietitian and integrative therapeutic nutritionist Dr Geetika Chopra says that if someone is eating sweets every day but in very small quantities then there is no problem. But eating too much sweets and sweets after every meal can cause problems. Eating too much sugar can cause insulin spike. When there is an insulin spike, HBA1C increases in the body. Which means, there is a higher risk of getting diabetes.
What do experts say?
Geetika says that due to insulin spike, along with sugar, fat also starts increasing. Actually, insulin is a fat storage hormone. As insulin increases, more fat also starts accumulating in the body. Which is the biggest reason for weight gain. Apart from this, it is also not good for heart health. According to WebMed, if you eat too much sweets then the fat cells get disturbed. In such a situation, it releases a chemical which increases weight.

Why do we crave for sweets?
Now the question is why there is a craving for sweets. Regarding this, Geetika says that the craving for sweets is also related to insulin. When insulin spikes in the body, hormonal imbalance also occurs. Due to which the body starts craving for sweets. In such a situation, you will have to maintain your insulin balance, due to which there will be no craving for sweets and the body will be protected from many diseases.

Geetika says that white sugar is no less than poison for our body. WHO has accepted that consumption of white sugar is like poison for our body, which shows its effect gradually. In such a situation, it should be avoided completely. Instead of white sugar, you can use sweetener like jaggery, honey or desi khand.
