BRICS 2026: India takes command! Sherpas gathered in Delhi, consensus reached on these big issues

The first meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas under the chairmanship of India was held in New Delhi on 9 and 10 February. The meeting was chaired by India’s BRICS Sherpa Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela and joined by Joint Secretary (Multilateral Economic Relations) Shambhu L Hakki (India’s BRICS Sous Sherpa).

BRICS Sherpas and senior officials from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and UAE participated in the meeting. BRICS Sherpas and representatives of the countries have together met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on 10 February 2026.

This is India’s theme and priority

During the meeting, India outlined its priorities for its chairpersonship in 2026 under the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. Several ministries and departments of the Government of India outlined India’s priorities and proposed activities under different BRICS thematic areas, including cooperation in health, labor and employment, agriculture, environment, disaster risk reduction, energy, climate change, ICT, innovation, security and counter-terrorism, economic and financial domains.

Apart from this, views were also exchanged on the institutional development of BRICS group. In line with the India-people-centric approach of the Chairmanship, presentations were also made on Sports Cooperation, Youth Connect, Cultural Engagement, BRICS Academic Forum, BRICS Think Tank Council, BRICS Civil Forum as well as BRICS Business Council and BRICS Women’s Business Alliance.

Representatives of BRICS partner countries participated in the initial session of the meeting. BRICS members and partner countries praised the theme and priorities set by India for its Chairmanship, which builds on the cooperative activities undertaken under previous BRICS Chairships.

During the meeting, BRICS countries shared their vision to advance the priorities of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability and a people-centric approach. Delegates visited National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy and Akshardham Temple. BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas will continue to meet regularly throughout the year to coordinate work on different thematic tracks.
