Outrage at DU’s Hansraj College as campus allegedly used for principal’s son’s wedding

New Delhi: Delhi University’s Hansraj College has witnessed protests after large parts of its North Delhi campus were reportedly used for the wedding celebrations of Principal Rama Sharma’s son. Students claimed the campus was transformed into a private wedding venue with colourful tents, decorations and workers seen preparing the grounds.

Visuals widely circulated on social media showed large sections of the college draped in colourful tents with workers making last-minute preparations. Students alleged that parts of the campus including the hostel building were converted into accommodation for wedding guests, disrupting and restricting student access.

Students protest led by SFI

More than 200 students gathered on the college grounds on Monday which was led by the Students’ Federation of India’s (SFI) Hansraj College. Protesters accused the administration of operating with ‘double standards’, stating that facilities routinely denied to students were suddenly made available for a private celebration.

In a statement, SFI claimed that students are not allowed to use college grounds after 4 PM for sports activities and are frequently denied permission to hold freshers’ welcomes and farewell events. The student body further alleged that the annual ‘Khelo Hansraj’ sports tournament was rescheduled to make way for the wedding arrangements.

Asikul Islam, secretary of the SFI’s Hansraj College unit said, ‘The principal treats our campus like a private estate, while students continue to struggle with restrictions and inadequate facilities. Today’s turnout shows students will not remain silent.’

As per ANI report, student confirmed that the college ground had been handed over to the principal for her son’s wedding. ‘This is the same ground students are forced to vacate after 4 pm every day, where farewells and college fests are not permitted. Even when permission is granted, activities are restricted till 5 pm. The wedding, however, is being held well beyond those limits,’ the student said.

Questions over hostel use, administration responds

Pointing to another alleged inconsistency, the student said the hostel which had been declared unfit for students for year  had suddenly been converted into a guesthouse for wedding attendees.

Principal Rama Sharma did not respond to calls and messages seeking comment. As per ANI report, responding to the controversy, Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta dismissed the allegations, saying there was ‘no unnecessary controversy.’ He clarified that the principal resides in a college-allotted residence and is entitled to host personal celebrations there.
