Hormuz Strait and Trump.
Military tension between America and Iran has once again reached a dangerous level, which is affecting the global energy market. After the latest missile attacks between the two countries, the world’s most important oil route ‘Strait of Hormuz’ has been blocked. Amidst this tense environment, US President Donald Trump has given a big statement on Monday. Trump has said that America should take control of the Strait of Hormuz. He also made it clear that America should also get compensation (money) in return for securing one of the most important trade routes in the world.
We will become the ‘guardian angels’ of the Straits
Speaking on the Fox News program ‘Fox & Friends’, Donald Trump said, “We will own this waterway and probably operate it. We will become the protector of this route. Maybe we should call it the ‘Guardian angel of the strait’, and we should also get paid for it.” Trump further said that the rich countries around the world who take advantage of this route and are with America, should compensate them financially for this. According to him, America cannot be expected to carry out such a huge security responsibility for free without any profit or payment.
Iran closed sea route, gave strict warning
This entire military dispute deepened when Iran closed this waterway on Saturday citing unauthorized movement. After this, on Sunday, Tehran made it clear that the movement of ships will remain suspended for the time being. Iran says new permits will not be issued until ‘peace and stability’ is fully restored in the area. On Monday, Iran’s ‘Revolutionary Guards’ also issued a strict statement. It has been warned that normal movement of commercial ships through this route will be restored only when America immediately stops its military intervention in this waterway. Iran has warned that if America’s interference continues, it may have even more serious consequences in the global oil and gas sector.
End of 60 day interim agreement
On Monday, there were heavy missile and drone attacks between US and Iranian forces. Tehran claims that it has attacked US military bases in the Gulf and kept the Strait of Hormuz closed, due to which oil prices have increased rapidly in the international market. In comparison to last week, both the speed and scope of these attacks have increased significantly. This latest conflict has also broken the interim agreement made last month between the US and Iran, under which it was decided to maintain peace and keep the road open during the next 60 days of talks. Expressing his deep displeasure over the breaking of this agreement, Trump said, “We had a deal, which was confirmed, but they broke it. They always break it. We have made deals with these people 10 times, so now we are going to hit them very hard.”
