Uttar Pradesh Jal Jeevan Mission: A major success of Jal Jeevan Mission has come to light in the UP Economic Review 2025-26. Through solar energy based projects, pure drinking water from tap has reached 91% of rural homes, which has provided relief to crores of people and protection to the environment.
The rural picture of Uttar Pradesh is changing rapidly. Villages that once depended on hand pumps and tankers have today moved towards pure drinking water from taps. The Uttar Pradesh Economic Review 2025-26 report presents a concrete and credible picture of this transformation, detailing the unprecedented achievements of the Jal Jeevan Mission and clean drinking water schemes. This is not just an expansion of infrastructure, but a major social transformation involving health, environment and rural economy.
water beyond settlements to every family
According to the Economic Review, under Jal Jeevan Mission, drinking water supply is no longer limited to settlements or selected areas only. The government’s focus is on providing regular and pure water to every rural family. Under the mission, continuous work is being done to provide an average of 55 liters of pure drinking water per person per day in rural areas, thereby strengthening both the standard of living and health security.

Solar energy becomes solution to electricity problem
The biggest challenge in rural drinking water schemes has been uninterrupted power supply. In view of this problem, priority was given to solar energy based drinking water projects in inaccessible and remote areas. Till January 2026, out of 40,955 projects operated in the state, 33,157 projects are running on solar energy, whose total capacity is about 900 MW.
Through these projects, 67,013 villages will get direct benefits and safe drinking water will be provided to approximately 13.30 crore rural population. With the use of solar energy, not only are projects being completed on time, but operating costs have also been reduced significantly.
Savings worth thousands of crores, relief to the environment too
The Economic Review has estimated that solar energy based systems will save about Rs 37,395 crore in operating costs over the next 30 years. With this, there will be a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by about 13 lakh metric tons. This achievement is being considered a strong example for the state in terms of environmental protection.
Tap water reached 91 percent homes
Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, a target was set to connect 16.69 crore rural population of 2.67 crore houses with pure drinking water by December. In comparison, 2.43 crore household tap connections have been provided by December 2025, benefiting 15.12 crore rural people. This is about 91 percent of the target.
At present, regular, quality and adequate quantity of drinking water supply is being ensured in 46,303 revenue villages of the state, which shows the effective implementation of the scheme.
Youth and women become the backbone of water mission
Jal Jeevan Mission is not limited to infrastructure only, but also involves employment and skill development on a large scale. By January 2026, 7.56 lakh youth have been trained in works like electrician, pump operator, plumber, fitter and motor mechanic. Along with this, 5.51 lakh women have been trained for water quality testing through field test kits, due to which they are fulfilling the important responsibility of water security in their villages.
Equal focus on cleanliness and awareness
Keeping health security in mind, campaigns like ‘Stop Diarrhea Campaign’ have been taken to every village by the State Drinking Water and Sanitation Mission. Programs like ‘Know Your Water’, identification and timely repair of water leaks are being run at the district, block and village levels, so that water-borne diseases can be effectively controlled.
Strong steps towards overall development
The data of Economic Review 2025-26 clearly indicates that Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttar Pradesh is not just a government scheme but has become a strong foundation for securing the basic needs of rural life. On all these fronts – pure water, cleanliness, employment and environment – this mission seems to be taking the state towards long-term development.
