New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced on-screen marking (OSM) method for the evaluation of Class 12 board exam answer sheets. From the 2026 academic year, CBSE school teachers will assess answer scripts digitally instead of checking physical copies.
The board clarified that this new system will apply only to Class 12 exams. Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be evaluated in physical form.
Why CBSE is introducing on-screen marking
CBSE said the move to on-screen marking is aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and speed in the evaluation process. In a circular issued on February 9, the board explained that digital evaluation will help eliminate common mistakes such as totalling errors and reduce delays linked to manual checking.
The board listed several benefits of the new system. On-screen marking will reduce the need for physical coordination and allow faster evaluation by enabling more teachers to participate. Teachers will be able to evaluate answer sheets from their own schools without travelling to evaluation centres. This is expected to save time, reduce costs and ensure quicker declaration of results.
CBSE also said that post-result verification of marks will no longer be required which will further reduce the workload and manpower needed after results are announced. The board described the new system as an environmentally friendly digital process and said it would allow greater participation from CBSE-affiliated schools including those located abroad.
CBSE board exam schedule 2026
As per the CBSE Class 10, 12 date sheet 2026, board exams will begin on February 17. Class 10 exams will end on March 11, while Class 12 exams will conclude on April 10.
To ensure smooth implementation of on-screen marking, CBSE has directed schools to maintain basic digital infrastructure. This includes a computer lab with a public static IP, computers or laptops with Windows 8 or above, at least 4 GB RAM, updated internet browsers, Adobe Reader, reliable internet connectivity of at least 2 Mbps and an uninterrupted power supply.
CBSE said these requirements are already part of its affiliation rules. The board also plans to conduct multiple trial runs, organise training programmes, release instructional videos and set up a call centre to help schools and teachers handle technical issues.
