SIR process wraps up in Tamil Nadu today; final voter list to be out on Feb 17 with 5.65 crore expected electors

Chennai: The Special Intensive Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu will conclude today, paving the way for the final publication of the state’s voter list on February 17. The exhaustive revision process, which began in November, is expected to yield a final roll with approximately 5.65 crore eligible voters for the upcoming Assembly elections.

SIR revision process: 34.75 lakh applications, 12 lakh notices issued

The draft electoral roll was published on December 19, initiating a period for claims, objections, and corrections. According to officials, a significant 34.75 lakh applications were received across the state for new enrollments, deletions, and corrections through both offline camps and online portals. Concurrently, the Election Commission issued notices to about 12 lakh individuals whose names appeared in the draft but lacked proper documentary verification, directing officials to complete the scrutiny process by today’s deadline.

Cleaning the roll: Nearly 1 crore names removed from draft list

A key aspect of the SIR was the purification of the voter database. Reports indicate that a substantial 97.37 lakh (9.737 million) names were identified and removed from the draft roll. According to officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI), these deletions typically account for duplicate entries, deceased voters, and those who have permanently relocated.

With the conclusion of all field-level verifications and data entry today, the final electoral roll will be frozen and published on February 17. This updated list will form the foundation for the electoral battle in Tamil Nadu, providing the final count of citizens eligible to vote in the high-stakes polls expected in April this year.
