according to legend…
According to the legend, once Ravana wished to bring Lord Shiva to Lanka. He wanted Lord Shiva to always reside in Lanka. After this, Ravana started rigorous penance to bring Lord Shiva to Lanka. Showing the height of his devotion, he cut off his nine heads and offered them in the fire in the name of Lord Shiva.
When he was about to cut off his tenth head and offer it in the fire, Lord Shiva appeared and was pleased with Ravana’s devotion and asked him to ask for a boon. As a boon, Ravana requested Bholenath to go to Lanka. On this, Lord Shiva gave him his Atmalinga, but kept the condition that if he placed the Linga anywhere on the ground during the journey, it would be established there.
Ravana left for Lanka carrying Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva told Ravana that then no one would be able to lift it. After listening to Lord Shiva, Ravana set out towards Lanka with his Atmalinga. Here the gods became afraid that if Ravana succeeded in taking Lord Shiva to Lanka, his powers would become invincible and he would become a menace to the world. Then Lord Vishnu performed a leela to protect the gods.
When Ravana reached near the land of Devghar with the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva, with the help of Varun Dev, he got a strong doubt. Then Ravana was thinking about whom he should hand over the Atmalinga, then he saw a cowherd there. This cowherd was none other than Lord Vishnu himself. Ravana handed over the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva to the cowherd and went to retire himself. Here the cowherd placed the Atmalinga on the ground.
Mahadev appeared in the form of a ‘Vaidya’
According to the scriptures, as soon as Lord Shiva’s Atmalinga was placed on the ground, it became established there. When Ravana returned, he saw that Atmalinga had been established on the ground. Seeing this Ravana got very angry. He tried to lift it, but could not. Ravana is also the reason behind this Jyotirlinga being named Baidyanam. According to the stories, after beheading Ravana, Mahadev appeared in the form of a ‘Vaidya’ i.e. doctor.
After this, Mahadev joined Ravana’s heads and gave him health. Due to the Vaidya form of Mahadev, this Jyotirlinga is known as Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.
