The economic survey of Yogi government revealed that the role of agriculture in the economy of Uttar Pradesh has strengthened. UP has taken a leading position in the country in food grain production, farmer schemes, animal husbandry, fisheries and food processing.
Lucknow. Agriculture has once again emerged as an example of strength in the economy of Uttar Pradesh. Yogi government, while presenting the economic survey in the legislature during the budget session, made it clear that agriculture and farmers are still the axis of development of the state. The government’s focus on making farming profitable with the help of low cost, high production and modern technology was clearly visible.
The Economic Survey said that since 2017, Uttar Pradesh has made continuous progress in sectors like agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries and today the state is among the leading agricultural states of the country.
Increasing contribution of agriculture in the economy
According to the Economic Survey, while the contribution of agriculture and allied sectors was 24 percent in 2017-18, it has increased to 24.9 percent in 2024-25. Uttar Pradesh ranks first in the country in terms of food grain production. In the year 2024-25, 737.4 lakh metric tonnes of food grains were produced in the state.
In the last seven years, total food grain production has increased by 28.5 percent and productivity by 11.8 percent. Now the share of UP in the total food grain production of the country has increased to 20.6 percent.

Strong hold of paddy and wheat
Uttar Pradesh has continuously progressed in paddy production. The share of paddy in agricultural gross value addition is 13.1 percent. The area of paddy has increased by about 19 percent and production by more than 23 percent.
Wheat plays the most important role among Rabi crops. Wheat contributes 18.7 percent to agricultural gross value addition. Its productivity has increased to 41.2 quintals per hectare.
Big change in pulses and oilseeds
The impact of government policies like pulses-oilseeds mission, MSP and micro irrigation schemes is clearly visible. The area of pulses has increased to 25.66 lakh hectares and the area of oilseeds has increased by about 165 percent to 28.8 lakh hectares.
Strong support of schemes for farmers
The government has emphasized on many schemes to make the farmers financially strong-
- Assistance of more than Rs 94 thousand crore to 3.12 crore farmers under PM-Kisan scheme
- Crop insurance scheme compensates lakhs of farmers for their losses
- Installation of more than 86 thousand solar pumps
- Construction of more than 32 thousand farm ponds
- Crop loan distribution of more than Rs 13 lakh crore
These schemes have played a big role in taking farming out of risk.
UP towards self-reliance in seed production
A big step has been taken towards making Uttar Pradesh the seed production center of the country. Modern seed parks are being built in five agro-climatic zones of the state. The first seed park to be built in Attari area of Lucknow will provide high quality seeds to farmers and also generate employment for rural youth.
Earnings increased from horticulture and food processing
UP is already a leader in the production of mango, potato, vegetables, honey and peas. Also, the state is fast emerging as the food processing hub of India. Lakhs of youth have got employment from more than 65 thousand food processing units in the state.
Big role of women in farming
Economic survey shows that four out of five working women of the state are working in agriculture and related sectors. Women are contributing significantly to the family income through farming and animal husbandry.

- Increase in irrigated area by about 60 lakh hectares
- Crop intensity increased to 193.7 percent
- UP ranks first in milk production in the country
- More than 100 percent increase in fish production
Roadmap of developed Uttar Pradesh 2047
The government has set a target to make farming modern, technology-based and farmers prosperous by 2047. Goals like AI-based farming, micro irrigation, crop diversification and tripling the income of farmers can prove to be milestones in this direction.
Overall, the Economic Survey clearly indicates that the policies of the Yogi government have made farming not just a livelihood but a strong basis for development. If this pace continues, Uttar Pradesh can become the backbone of the country’s agricultural economy in the coming years.
