India dominate despite early USA scare
Defending champions India survive a top-order collapse to defeat the USA by 29 runs in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7.
Suryakumar Yadav and Co were favourites to register a dominating win, but the defending champions were put under pressure by the USA bowling attack. At one point, the hosts were struggling at 77/6 in 12 overs. But skipper Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial knock and smashed an unbeaten 84 runs off 49 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and four maximums.
His brilliant innings helped the Men in Blue to recover and post a competitive 161/9 in 20 overs. In reply, the Indian bowlers delivered a sensational performance and restricted the USA to 132/8 in 20 overs.
Mohammed Siraj, who replaced Harshit Rana in the World Cup squad, took three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel also claimed two wickets each. The defending champions will next take on Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on February 12, while the USA will face Pakistan on February 10 in Colombo.
