11 deliveries, 4 wides, 19 runs and 2 wickets: Barry McCarthy’s chaotic over vs Sri Lanka leaves fans baffled

New Delhi: It was pure chaos as Ireland Barry McCarthy bowled an eventful over during his side’s opener against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, February 08. McCarthy conceded 19 runs, bowled 11 deliveries, including four wides and a no-ball, and picked up two wickets on two balls in the same over, leaving fans baffled and amazed at the same time.

The chaos unfolded when McCarythy came to bowl the 19th over during Sri Lanka’s innings. He started with a big high full toss above shoulder against Kamindu Mendis, which was instantly deemed a no-ball by the on-field umpire. The ball got a deflection past the wicket-keeper and raced over the boundary ropes for a four in extras, giving Sri Lanka 5 runs without a legal delivery.

McCarthy then bowled back-to-back wides, before Mendis smashed the free-hit delivery for a six to make it 15 runs off just one legal delivery in the over. Mendis got a couple off the next ball before McCarthy bowled another wide. On the third delivery, Mendis managed a couple before getting caught by George Dockrell on the next ball.

Mendis was dismissed after scoring 44 off 19 balls. McCarthy made it two in two by dismissing Dasun Shanaka on a duck on the penultimate ball of the over. He bowled another wide before closing the over with a dot ball to new batter Wanindu Hasaranga. By the end of the over, McCarthy had bowled 11 deliveries, conceded 19 runs and taken two wickets in two balls, all in the same over.

With his eventful and chaotic over, Ireland’s McCarthy joined an unwanted list by bowling the joint-most deliveries in an over in the T20 World Cup. McCarthy and five others have bowled 11 deliveries in an over in a T20 World Cup, which is the most number of deliveries in a single over by any bowler in the tournament.
