New Delhi: India’s Yuki Bhambri’s dream run continued at the US Open 2025. He has now advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s doubles event alongside his Kiwi partner, Michael Venus.
The Indo-Kiwi pair, seeded 14th, upset 11th-seeded Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram 6,3 6,7(8-6), 6-3 in the quarterfinal game on September 3. Before advancing to his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal clash, Bhambri and Venus stunned the fourth-seeded German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the pre-quarterfinal match.
Bhambri and Venus played a hard-fought battle against Ram and Metkic. The game lasted around two hours and 37 minutes, as the Indo-Kiwi pair won the match in the decider set. Bhambri’s consistency in the service was top-notch, as the duo easily closed out the first set 6-3 in their favour.
They took an early lead of 3-1 by breaking the serve of Nikola and Rajeev. The 11th-seed pair was competing hard in the second half, as they broke the serve early in the set, just like their opponent had in the first set. However, the Indo-Kiwi pair levelled the game at 4-4 by breaking the serve. But, a costly double fault by Bhambri in the tie-breaker helped the 11th-seed pair to force the game into a decider set.
The Indo-Kiwi duo found their rhythm again in the third set and broke the serve earlier to close out the game 6-3 to enter the US Open’s semifinals.
This win also drew attention, as before partnering Bhambri, the Kiwi had been playing together with Metkic, and the duo had defeated Bhambri and his then-partner, Robert Galloway, at Wimbledon 2025. However, now the tables were turned, as the pair of Venus and Bhambri defeated the Kiwi’s former teammate.
The Delhi star is the only Indian left in the competition and will be the nation’s last hope to win glory at the US Open 2025. Bhambri and Venus will take on the UK’s sixth-seeded pair, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury, in the first semifinal at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday, September 5.
Yuki Bhambri in top 25 rankings
Yuki Bhambri, 33, is currently ranked 22nd in the men’s doubles event. He has experienced many ups and downs in his career, and with the injuries on his side, the Delhi star transitioned from the singles to the doubles category. He was a former Junior World No. 1, but after many years, Bhambri got the recognition by reaching his career’s best result in the Grand Slams.
If Bhambri wins the title, he will extend India’s legacy in tennis history, as the country hasn’t won the US Open men’s doubles title since 2013. By marking his first appearance in the Grand Slam semi-final, Bhambri will be eager to etch his name in the record books.
