The origin of Rahu and Ketu is related to Mudra Manthan.

The story of the origin of Rahu and Ketu is said to be related to the churning of the ocean. According to the story described in the Puranas, the gods along with the demons churned the ocean. Amrit emerged from the churning of the ocean, over which there was a dispute between the gods and demons. Both gods and demons wanted to drink nectar. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and reached among the gods and demons.

Mohini said that she will give nectar to the gods and demons. Both gods and demons agreed to this. After this, Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini started distributing nectar only to the gods, but this cunningness of Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini was seen by the demon named Swarbhanu. Then he assumed the form of the gods and drank the nectar.

Swarbhanu’s head and torso became immortal

However, Swarbhanu recognized the Sun and Moon gods. After this he informed this to Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini. Then Lord Vishnu came in his true form and cut off his head with his Sudarshan Chakra, but since Swarbhanu had drank the nectar, he did not die. As a result of drinking the nectar, both the head and torso of Swarbhanu became immortal.

Swarbhanu’s head was called Rahu and his torso was called Ketu. Because he had attained immortality. Therefore Rahu and Ketu were given a special place in the list of planets.
