Mumbai: India won against America in its first match of the T20 World Cup, but also made a poor record in batting. The Indian batting line-up faltered in a manner never seen before against a team considered weak at the Wankhede Stadium, famous for batting.
In the Indian innings, not a single boundary was hit in 27 consecutive balls from the fifth over to the tenth over. This shows how much pressure the team was under. This is India’s longest ‘boundary drought’ at Wankhede.
By the end of the powerplay, India had lost 4 wickets and the team was under immense pressure. 46 runs scored for the loss of 4 wickets in the powerplay is India’s third lowest score in the powerplay in T20 history. After thirteen overs, India’s score was 77-6 and the team was struggling. This is India’s fourth worst performance after thirteen overs in T20 cricket. Only 4 batsmen in the Indian batting line-up could cross the double figures. Only captain Suryakumar Yadav (84*) and Tilak Verma (25) could face the American attack.
On this batting of India, former player R. Ashwin made scathing criticism on Twitter (first). He wrote, ‘Look what a big pit we have fallen into.’ Ashwin also wrote that this pitch was different from the Wankhede pitch seen in IPL and both the planning and method of the Indian batsmen failed.

After the match, captain Suryakumar Yadav also admitted that mistakes cannot be hidden just by winning. He said, ‘We have to bat better than this. Should have played a little more wisely. A lot can be learned from the won matches also.
