One of the oldest temples among these is the Sripatala Bhogeshwara Swamy Temple located at Kalidindi in Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh. Currently construction work is going on in the temple. According to mythology, this temple was built during the reign of Vengiraja Rajaraja Chola. A farmer of this area was plowing his field when his plow collided with a Shivalinga. It is said that as soon as the plow hit, blood started flowing. This incident happened during the reign of Rajaraja Narendra, son of Rajaraja Chola.

According to belief, Shivalinga fell three miles away from Kalidindi. When Shivalinga was seen, it was broken by the ploughshare. The broken Shivalinga was re-installed. Many devotees of the Shivalinga connected in this way still worship in the sanctum sanctorum and keep coming for darshan. Another specialty of this temple is that, if you go near the pond here, the water comes out with the sound of ‘Har Har’. At present work is being done on the important walls of the temple.

Another ancient Shivalinga was found during excavation during the restoration work. It is believed that this is the oldest Shivling till date. The news spread throughout the area that the statue of Lord Shiva had been found. A large number of devotees are flocking to have darshan of this Shivalinga.
