Sometimes a small health checkup can change the entire life of a child. Something similar happened with 10-year-old Trishant Yadav from Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh. During a routine health checkup at school, the ‘Chirayu’ team, operated under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), identified his congenital heart disease in time. After this, the child got a new life by getting completely free treatment and successful heart surgery through the government system. This case has emerged as an example of timely investigation and effectiveness of government health schemes.
Serious illness revealed during investigation in school
Trishant Yadav, a resident of Sindhaurikhurd village in Kurud development block of Dhamtari district, used to go to school normally. The family had no idea that he was suffering from congenital heart disease.
During a routine health checkup conducted at the school, the ‘Chirayu’ team noticed an abnormality in her heartbeat. After the primary investigation, the family members were advised to immediately conduct a high-level investigation. Experts at District Hospital Dhamtari confirmed that the child had a congenital heart problem and an immediate operation was necessary.
Free treatment from Dhamtari to Raipur, heart surgery successful
Under the guidance of the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), the Viva team completed all the necessary formalities from referral rapidly. After this Trishant was admitted to MMI Hospital in Raipur.
On July 8, 2026, a team of expert doctors performed a successful heart operation. The treatment was completely free. After the operation, the child’s condition is stable and he is recovering rapidly and returning to normal life. The Viva team is continuously monitoring his health even after discharge.
Hope created for poor families, important role of RBSK
Trishant’s parents say that if there was no health checkup in the school, they would not have known about their son’s illness. Due to weak financial condition, it was not possible for him to get treatment worth lakhs of rupees. Expressing his gratitude to the state government and the health department, he said that this scheme has brought happiness to his son as well as the entire family.
The ‘Chirayu’ scheme operated under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) is not limited to just identification of the disease but ensures the entire process from diagnosis, referral, free treatment, surgery and post-operation follow-up. This case of Dhamtari shows that timely screening and effective government health services can give a new direction to the lives of children.
