Chaturmas 2026: The time of Chaturmas is considered very special in Sanatan Dharma. This is the time when divine power changes. Lord Vishnu takes charge of the maintenance of the world for eight months of the year, but goes into Yoga Nidra during the four months of Chaturmas. This is the time for Lord Vishnu to rest. At this time, the charge of the world is taken over by Mahadev and other gods and goddesses and ancestral gods.
Every year Chaturmas starts in the month of Ashadha and ends in the month of Kartik. On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month, Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra and with this Chaturmas begins. After this, Lord Vishnu wakes up on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month and takes charge of the world again.
Chaturmas is considered the time of meditation
According to Drik Panchang, this year Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month is going to be celebrated on 25th July. This year, in the month of Ashadha, this will be the day when Lord Vishnu will go into Yoga Nidra. After this, there will be a ban on all auspicious and auspicious activities including marriage, engagement etc. The time of Chaturmas is the time of staying away from worldly pleasures and taking bath, offering prayers, reciting prayers, chanting and meditation.
There is a religious belief that bathing, donating, worshipping, chanting and doing sadhana during Chaturmas gives many times more virtuous results. This year, Devuthani Ekadashi will be celebrated on 20th November and on this day, after Lord Vishnu wakes up from Yoganidra, Chaturmas will end and the divine power will change again. Lord Vishnu will again take over the responsibility of maintaining the world. After this, all the auspicious and auspicious works including marriage, engagement etc. will be started once again.
Why are auspicious works not done in Chaturmas?
During the time of Chaturmas, no auspicious activities like marriage, engagement, housewarming, tonsure, betrothal, farewell, upanayana etc. are done because Lord Vishnu is in Yoganidra at this time. This time is considered to be the sleeping period of the Gods and it is necessary for the Gods to be awake for auspicious works, hence it is believed that auspicious works do not get auspicious results in Chaturmas.
