Residents of Mohali are currently facing a serious crisis, where prolonged and unscheduled power cuts have made life extremely difficult.
Amid the scorching heat, not only has the erratic electricity supply troubled the residents, but water supply has also been irregular.
On Monday, the residents of Sohana village staged a dharna on the Airport Road, raising slogans against the Punjab government and the local administration. Their main demand was restoration and provision of basic facilities like electricity and water.
Parvinder Singh Sohana, a SAD leader of Mohali constituency, said: “When people don’t receive electricity at all, what is the point in offering it for free? This government has failed on every front – there is neither electricity nor water. The people of Punjab have already decided to throw them out completely.” He emphasised that this state cannot run on fake promises but needs a government that actually delivers.
Sohana warned that if the current situation persists, the protest will intensify, and major road blockades will be organised. He said the public outrage clearly shows that mere announcements and advertisements won’t work anymore – real work is needed to win the trust of the people. He added that the electricity department has neither proper infrastructure nor enough staff, which is the reason behind these unannounced power cuts. He demanded that the basic power infrastructure be strengthened immediately and that staff be recruited without delay.
He demanded that Sohana village be immediately connected to the water booster installed in Sector 77, as it is linked to canal water and other surrounding areas have already been connected to it. Only Sohana remains to be linked. He held the Mohali administration, especially the Mayor of Mohali, Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu, responsible for the delay.
The residents of Sohana warned that if the situation doesn’t improve immediately, protest will be scaled up. They asserted full support for the ongoing struggle of the villagers. Present on the occasion were Harvinder Singh Nambardar, councillor Sucha Singh Kalour, councillor Harjinder Kaur, former sarpanch Gurdeep Singh, Charanjit Kaur, Balbir Kaur, Harpreet Singh, Manjit Singh Pappi, and other notable individuals.
