Air India Crash: Signal Lost At 625 feet, 242 Onboard – What We Know

An Air India plane bound for London crashed near Ahmedabad airport Thursday afternoon soon after taking off. The incident reportedly took place between 1 pm and 2 pm.

The signal from the aircraft was lost at 10:08 local time at 625 feet, less than a minute after take off, according to Flightradar24, a website that gives real time information on flights from all around the world.

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on https://airindia.com and on our X handle,” Air India posted on X.

In a statement, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu said he is personally monitoring the situation and that he has directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action.

“We are on highest alert. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families,” he said.

Here’s what we know so far:

  1. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to the Gujarat Chief Minister and has assured of all possible Central government assistance, sources said.
  2. The flight went down between 1 pm and 2 pm.
  3. The aircraft crashed in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad, police said.
  4. The Air India flightwas scheduled to fly from Ahmedabad International Airport to London Gatwick Airport. Its scheduled time of departure was 09:50 local time and scheduled arrival time was 18:25 local time.
  5. As per DGCA, the aircraft was under the command of Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal, who has 8,200 hours of flying experience. The co-pilot had 1,100 hours of experience.
  6. The Border Security Force and National Security Guard are at the accident spot.
  7. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said fire officer Jayesh Khadia.
  8. Several injured persons were taken to city civil hospital, an official said.
