“It’s a very new genre for me” — Rajkummar Rao on his upcoming film Maalik

Post the success of Bhool Chuk Maaf, Rajkummar Rao is all set to surprise audiences with a brand-new avatar in his upcoming film Maalik. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the versatile actor opened up about the project, his character, and collaborating with director Pulkit, calling it one of the most exciting experiences of his career.The makers just released the teaser of the film which got a very overwhelming response, it is slated to relase on 11th July.

“I am very thrilled for Maalik,” Rajkummar revealed, visibly excited about the film. “I am very, very excited. It’s a very new genre for me. I haven’t done anything like this in my career till date.”

Known for his compelling performances in films across genres — from intense dramas like Shahid and Trapped to slice-of-life entertainers like Bareilly Ki Barfi — Rajkummar shared that stepping into this gritty, raw space was both challenging and rewarding. “I had a lot of fun playing this,” he said. I had a great experience making the whole film and playing this part.”

Describing his character, he said, “Playing Maalik, who is such a tough,, raw guy — who is so powerful, so strong… I am talking about both physical and emotional strength — I had a great time.”

Praising the film’s director, Rajkummar didn’t hold back his admiration. “Pulkit is a phenomenal maker,” he stated. “He is a great combination of keeping it real but commercial — the kind of cinema I love watching.”
