Bharat Taxi in Delhi NCR: How to book a ride, fare structure to know cost of your daily commute

New Delhi: Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, will be launched today by Union Minister Amit Shah. The platform has been positioned as a commuter-friendly alternative to existing app-based cab services dominated by private companies.

For daily commuters, the biggest promise lies in zero commission and no surge pricing, two long-standing pain points for riders who often face unpredictable fares during peak hours, bad weather or emergencies. According to the ministry, fares on Bharat Taxi remain stable, with earnings distributed directly to drivers, potentially reducing cancellations caused by incentive-driven algorithms.

The Bharat Taxi app on Google Play Store says, “Why Choose Bharat Taxi? Zero commission rides – fair fares for customers, full earnings for drivers; Fast bookings – get the nearest driver in seconds; Transparent fares – clear pricing with no hidden charges; Lower cancellations – happier drivers, more reliable rides; Easy payments – pay via UPI or cash.”

3 lakh drivers, 1 lakh users, 10,000+ rides in pilot run

Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, Bharat Taxi began pilot operations on December 2 in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat. Within two months, it has onboarded over 3 lakh drivers, registered more than 1 lakh users. The app is completing 10,000+ rides daily, signalling early traction among both drivers and commuters.

Unlike many platforms that bind drivers through exclusivity clauses, Bharat Taxi allows them to work across multiple apps. For commuters, this could translate into better availability, especially during rush hours. The platform also provides verified ride data, emergency assistance and support centres (currently operating at seven locations in Delhi) to address rider grievances.

Sarathis and Biker Didi

Safety and inclusion are key parts of the pitch. Under its “Bike Didi” initiative, over 150 women drivers have joined the platform, offering riders, especially women, more choice and a potentially safer commute experience. Drivers, called ‘Sarathis’, receive access to health insurance, accident cover, retirement savings and a support system, which the ministry says contributes to more reliable service delivery.

So far, around Rs 10 crore has been distributed directly to drivers. During the launch, six top-performing Sarathis will be honoured, receiving Rs 5 lakh personal accident insurance and Rs 5 lakh family health insurance each.

With plans to expand to all states and cities within two years, Bharat Taxi aims to build a nationwide, cooperative-based mobility ecosystem integrated with India’s digital public infrastructure, offering commuters a more predictable, transparent and locally owned ride-hailing option.
