Pickleball is taking the world by storm and increasingly emerging as a bridge between cultures. On February 3, a group of students from Shanghai headed to the US for a China-US pickleball exchange, building friendships through pickleball.
The initiative marks a significant milestone, as this is the first time Chinese students have travelled to the US as part of the pickleball exchange, reported Chinese news agency Xinhua. The programme is designed to combine athletic engagement with educational and cultural learning, using pickleball as a shared language that transcends borders. Through friendly competition, classroom interactions, and community activities, students are given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures, values, and daily lives.
The exchange builds on a foundation laid in 2025, when 31 US students from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in the state of Maryland visited Shanghai as part of the same initiative. That visit helped foster relationships between schools and demonstrated how a fast-growing sport like pickleball can serve as a meaningful platform for international cooperation at the youth level.
China and the US are no strangers to sports-driven cultural exchanges, particularly in racquet sports. In 1971, at a time when diplomatic ties between the two nations were frozen, US table tennis players visited China in a historic series of exchanges that came to be known as Ping-Pong Diplomacy. That landmark moment is widely regarded as a turning point in US-China relations and remains a powerful example of how sport can open doors to dialogue and mutual understanding.
Encouraged by the success of earlier interactions, Montgomery County Public Schools has already announced its decision to continue the cultural exchange. As part of the 2026 initiative, MCPS will host a delegation from Shanghai from February 5-7, 2026. This will be followed by an MCPS delegation visit to China from February 13-24, 2026. The return trip will include educational, athletic, and cultural exchanges in four cities: Shenzhen, Shangyou, Hebi, and Beijing.
The MCPS delegation of 45 ambassadors will include 31 new students, seven returning student ambassadors, and seven adults. Together, they will take part in a range of structured activities aimed at fostering collaboration, cross-cultural communication, and lasting friendships.
Notably, the 2026 exchange will take place during the Lunar New Year and Spring Festival, one of the most sacred and culturally significant periods in China. Participation during this time offers MCPS student and staff ambassadors a rare and meaningful opportunity to engage directly with Chinese communities during a season traditionally dedicated to family, reflection, and renewal.
As pickleball continues to grow globally, initiatives like this demonstrate that the sport’s impact extends far beyond competition. By bringing young people together across continents, pickleball is quietly carving out a new chapter in sports diplomacy – one rally, one handshake, and one shared experience at a time.
