In the India-Afghanistan match in the U-19 World Cup, 9 runs were scored on one ball. The ball left by the keeper hit the helmet kept on the field and crossed the boundary, resulting in 5 penalties and 4 boundary runs.
Harare: A surprising sight was seen in the India-Afghanistan semi-final of the Under-19 World Cup. Without any no-ball or six, India gave away nine runs on a single ball, which shocked the fans. All this happened on the last ball of the 17th over of Indian player Deepesh Devendran. Deepesh had given only one run on the first five balls of that over. But the last ball of the over, which was bowled on the leg side, was missed by Afghan batsman Faisal Shinosada. The ball went to wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu without hitting the bat. But, the keeper could not catch the ball properly.
The ball escaped from his hands and hit the helmet of the fielding team kept on the field and then crossed the boundary. Including 5 penalty runs for hitting the helmet and 4 runs for the boundary, Afghanistan got 9 runs on a single ball.
What does ICC rule say?
According to ICC rule 28.3.2, if the ball hits the fielding team’s helmet or any other object kept on the field, the batting team gets 5 penalty runs. Apart from this, the ball crossed the boundary, which resulted in 4 runs. In this way, 9 runs were added to Afghanistan’s account on one ball.
