Neeraj Chopra crossed the 90m mark at the Doha Diamond League at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium, ending a long wait in his glorious career the achieve the significant feat.
The 27-year-old achieved the feat on the third throw of the night on Friday (May 16).Neeraj has become the first Indian to achieve the milestone and get a national record, which previously belonged to him. Neeraj started his evening with a throw of 88.44m before the historic 90.23 m with a throw. His second and fifth throws of the evening were foul throws and hence they were not measured. The Tokyo Olympics gold medalist recorded 80.56m before completing his evening with an 88.20m throw. However, he failed to win the event as Julian Webber created history on his sixth and final throw of the evening with a 91.06m. The German also set a personal best by throwing 90m for the first time in his career.Webber had a day to remember in Doha with four throws above the 88m mark. He made a poor start with throws of 83.82m and 855.57m before progressively getting better with throws of 89.06, 88.05, 89.84, and 91.06. Despite his failure to finish on the top spot, Neeraj has continued a remarkable streak, which started four years as he has not finished below second in any competition he has competed in since his gold medal win in the Tokyo Olympics. India’s Kishore Jena finished 8th with a best throw of 78.06m.
