From the ‘crazy’ race, to the mistakes, to the ‘completely destroyed bike’: Enea Bastianini recalls the French GP

Enea Bastianini experienced a chaotic race in Le Mans, marked by crashes, strategic mistakes and extreme conditions. He finished 13th after two falls and a penalty.

The Italian didn’t hide how unpredictable the race was: ‘Yeah. Crazy race. And it was difficult, I think, for everybody because the situation on track was really on the limit.’

Explaining the tyre choice at the start, he said: ‘We decided to start with the slick tyre because at that moment it seemed the best option.’ But trouble came fast: ‘I had to brake hard on the first corner and Pecco braked early. We crashed and made that mistake. Other riders crashed too.’

Bastianini tried to continue: ‘Then I tried to rejoin the race, but I crashed again. In the end, we were a bit lucky because it started raining and I changed bikes – mine was completely destroyed.’

But more issues followed: ‘I thought: “Okay, let’s try to do the maximum”. I restarted with the wet setup, but the guys hadn’t put the pit limiter on, so I exited very fast. The others got two Long Laps, and that’s alright for me. But I finished 13th and now have another Long Lap for the next race.’
