ChatGPT users wake up to outage in India, services unstable till morning

New Delhi: Users across multiple regions woke up to an unexpected disruption on February 4, 2026, as ChatGPT faced a widespread outage that left thousands unable to access the popular AI chatbot. Reports first surfaced in the United States late Tuesday night, before spreading to India in the early hours of Wednesday (IST).

Outage tracking website Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints, with users flagging login failures, blank screens, and error messages. Many took to social media to share screenshots and vent frustration, describing the experience as “hit or miss” through the morning.

What users saw during the outage

ChatGPT ‌was down for thousands of users in the U.S. on Tuesday, according to Downdetector.com, the outage tracking site noted in its incident log.

There were more than 1,500 ⁠incidents of people reporting issues with the ‌chatbot as ‌of 01 and – 4AM IST, ‍according to Downdetector.in. Users also reported that “the outage was intermittent thereafter till about 9:10AM.”

OpenAI status page shows errors

On the official service dashboard of OpenAI, ChatGPT was marked with an error status during the same window. “OpenAI’s status also displayed error status for ChatGPT.”

The company has not yet issued a detailed explanation about the root cause or the systems affected. No timeline for a permanent fix was shared at the time of writing.
