Indian Railways is going to achieve a new achievement on 17th July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train in Haryana. This train will run on the 89 kilometer long route between Jind and Sonipat. This train based on hydrogen fuel cell technology is being considered a big step towards green transport for Indian Railways. The inauguration will take place on July 17, but Northern Railway is yet to decide when its regular service will start for common passengers.
Will complete the journey of 89 kilometers in two hours
According to the operation schedule released by the Railway Board, during regular operations, Hydrogen train number 74010 will leave from Jind at 7:40 am and will reach Sonipat after about two hours at 9:40 am. In return, train number 74009 will depart from Sonipat at 10:40 am and reach Jind at 1:00 pm.
Railway Board has directed Northern Railway to decide the date for starting regular passenger service as soon as possible after the inauguration and inform about it.
Train will stop at these 12 stations
This train will stop at a total of 12 stations between Jind and Sonipat. These include Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Kheda, Bhambhewa, Ishapur Khedi, Butana, Khandrai, Gohana, Rabhada, Lath, Mohana Haryana and Barwasni stations. During the return journey also, the train will stop at all these stations. Thousands of passengers living on this route are expected to get the benefit of fast, modern and environment-friendly train service.
Train will make two round trips daily
According to the documents released earlier by the Railway Board, this 10-coach hydrogen DEMU train will travel a distance of about 356 kilometers daily. It will make two round trips each between Jind and Sonipat. The train has a seating arrangement for 682 passengers, while the total capacity to travel is around 2,600 passengers.
Speed of 120 km in trial, but will run at 75 km per hour
The hydrogen train had achieved a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour during the trials. However, keeping in mind the safety and operation of passengers, its maximum operating speed has been fixed at 75 kilometers per hour.
Hydrogen fuel cells have been used instead of diesel engines in this train, prepared after getting approval from the Railway Board in May 2026. This technology runs the train by generating electricity and this also reduces pollution significantly.
The train will run under special surveillance for the first three months
Giving priority to safety, the Railway Ministry has directed that engineers and technical experts trained in hydrogen technology will be present with the train for the first three months of its operation. If any technical problem arises during the journey, it will be resolved immediately. Indian Railways believes that this project will open a new path towards clean and sustainable rail transport in the future.
