BrahMos Unit Inaugurated: On the 27th anniversary of India’s historic Pokhran nuclear tests, the nation took another significant step in strengthening its defence capabilities with the inauguration of the BrahMos production unit in Lucknow.
Lucknow holds special significance in India’s defence history as it is the ‘Karmabhoomi’ of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the architect of Pokhran tests. The inauguration comes amid Pakistan’s continuous provocation and breach of ceasefire arrangement. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility at the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor on Sunday. Built at a cost of Rs 300 crore, the facility will manufacture one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles, with a range of 290 to 400 km and a top speed of Mach 2.8. The missile, a product of BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, can be launched from land, sea, or air and uses a “fire and forget” system.During the inauguration, Rajnath Singh recalled that on this day in 1998, India witnessed nuclear tests in Rajasthan’s Pokhran. He said that he wanted to attend in person, but couldn’t due to the ongoing tensions with Pakistan.

At inaugural ceremony in Lucknow, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “…It is National Technology Day today. On this day in 1998, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, our scientists held nuclear test in Pokhran and showed India’s strength to the world. That test was the result of immense efforts of our scientists, engineers, defence personnel and several other stakeholders…””I wanted to attend in person. But you know why I couldn’t come. Looking at the situation we are facing, it was important for me to be in Delhi. So, I am joining you via video conferencing…” the Defence Minister said. Besides the manufacturing unit, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility was also launched. This facility will play a key role in testing and assembling missiles. Completed in three and a half years, the BrahMos production unit in Lucknow stands on 80 hectares of land provided free of cost by the Uttar Pradesh government. The UP Defence Industrial Corridor, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, has six nodes – Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot – where major investments are being made to boost defence manufacturing. Uttar Pradesh is the second state after Tamil Nadu to establish a Defence Industrial Corridor.
