Yumnam Khemchand Singh to be new Manipur CM, elected BJP Legislative leader in Assembly

Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday named Yumnam Khemchand Singh as its legislative party leader in the Manipur Assembly, making him all set to become the state chief minister. The state is under President’s rule since past several months.

Khemchand belongs to the Meitei community. An engineer by profession, he was elected as an MLA from the Singjamei assembly constituency. The 62-year-old Khemchand Singh served as the Minister of Municipal Administration and Housing in the Biren Singh government.

Khemchand’s political influence can be gauged from the fact that he was a contender for the Chief Minister’s post in 2022. Khemchand is considered close to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
