Sabalenka stays on top despite Australian Open final loss, Djokovic up to third on men’s tour

New Delhi: Despite a loss in the Australian Open women’s singles final last week, Aryna Sabalenka has maintained her top ranking on the WTA Tour while Australian open men’s runner-up Novak Djokovic has moved up to number 3.

In an exciting women’s final contest, Sabalenka suffered a loss against Elena Rybakina, who moved two places up to third in the rankings, with Iga Swiatek stable at number 2. Three American players followed in the WTA rankings – number 4 Amanda Anisimova, Coco Gauff and Australia Open semifinalist Jessica Pegula.

Carlos Alcaraz maintains top spot

Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina has moved up two places to number 10 after her semifinal loss to Sabalenka at Melbourne Park. In the ATP rankings, Spanish ace Carlos Alcaraz completed a career Grand Slam of singles with his scintillating victory in the men’s final over Serbian and 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Djokovic on Sunday.

With Alcaraz maintaining his number one spot in the ATP rankings ahead of Jannik Sinner (No.2), who was beaten by Djokovic in an enthralling semifinal clash at the Melbourne Park. It is the first time the 38-year-old Djokovic has been inside the top three since August 2024.

Among the other men’s players, American Learner Tien was one of the biggest improvers on either tour by moving up five places on the ATP Tour to No. 24, a career high. The 20-year old player, who lost to now number 4-ranked Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, became the youngest American man to reach the final eight of a major since 2002.
