Assam Rifles organized a tribute ceremony at Radhanagar battalion on Friday. The event was organized in memory of Rifleman (GD) Govind Singh of 28 Assam Rifles, who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the country on 10 July 1996.
On July 10, 1996, a search operation was launched based on intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Mandrala area of Jammu and Kashmir. As soon as the troop reached near the suspected terrorist hideout, firing started. During the intense firefight, Rifleman (GD) Govind Singh displayed exemplary courage and devotion to duty. He was shot and later succumbed to his injuries, sacrificing his life in the highest traditions of valor and selfless service.
In this dignified ceremony, the battalion’s Subedar Major, Adjutant, Second-in-Command and Commandant offered floral tributes, in which all the soldiers participated. The gathering observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the martyred soldier, whose unwavering courage and supreme sacrifice continues to inspire generations of Assam Rifles personnel.
The ceremony serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers of Assam Rifles and reaffirms the force’s unwavering commitment to honor their legacy.
Tribute paid to martyred soldiers in Manipur too
Earlier on July 8, the Manipur government had also paid heartfelt tributes to two soldiers of the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles who were killed in an ambush by unidentified armed miscreants in Ukhrul district earlier this week.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Imphal International Airport, where Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Home Minister Govinddas Konthoujam, Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, ADGP L Dorjee, IGAR (South) Major General Gaurav Sharma, IGP CRPF Rajendra Narayan Dash and senior civil, police and military officials paid their last respects to the martyred soldiers.
