Rules of Mahashivratri fasting: Mahashivratri is one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees wish to get the special blessings of Bholenath by observing fast, keeping vigil at night and doing water anointment on Shivling. According to the Panchang, Mahashivratri fast will be observed on 15th February in the year 2026. It is believed that worship done with true heart on this day removes all the troubles, but if some mistakes are made during the puja and fast, then its results can also be opposite. Do not do these things on the day of Mahashivratri!
Ketaki flowers: According to the legend, Lord Shiva had banned Ketaki flower from his worship. Therefore, do not offer it to Shivling even by mistake.
Sindoor or Kumkum: Lord Shiva is a recluse and vermillion is considered a symbol of good luck, which is not offered to Mahadev. The use of ashes in his worship is considered correct.
Tulsi Dal: Use of Tulsi is prohibited in the worship of Lord Shiva. Instead of this you should use Belpatra.
Turmeric: Turmeric is related to female beauty, while Shivalinga is a symbol of the male element. Therefore turmeric should not be offered to Lord Shiva.

Always offer Belpatra with three leaves only. The leaves should not be cut, torn or dry anywhere. The smooth part of Belpatra should be towards Shivalinga.

Conch is mandatory in the worship of Lord Vishnu, but use of conch is prohibited in the worship of Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, Mahadev had killed the demon named Shankhchud, hence Shivalinga should not be consecrated with conch shell. Use a copper or brass pot for this.
Food and behavior precautions
Tamasic food: Do not consume onion, garlic, meat or alcohol at all on the day of Mahashivratri.
black clothes: One should avoid wearing black colored clothes during puja. Green, white or yellow color is considered auspicious on this day.
Discipline: Do not insult anyone on this day, nor create troubles at home. Keep your mind calm in devotion to Shiva.
Do not circumambulate half of Shivalinga?
Often people, out of enthusiasm, circumambulate the Shivalinga completely, but as per the rules, the complete circumambulation of the Shivalinga is not done. It is considered inauspicious to cross the place from where the anointing water comes out (which is called Jaladhari or Nirmali). One should always turn back from there.
