BRICS countries will increase cooperation in transport sector

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [भारत]July 11 (ANI): Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said the BRICS countries have adopted an important resolution to strengthen cooperation in the transport sector, with a focus on future-ready technology, innovation and sustainable connectivity. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the third BRICS Transport Ministerial meeting here, Gadkari said the discussions reflected the grouping’s commitment to advance transport infrastructure across road, rail, aviation and waterways.

Gadkari said, “We have had an important conference and meeting, especially of the transport ministers of the BRICS countries. There has been a lot of discussion at various levels in the last two days, and we have come to a conclusion. Our proposal has just been passed. It is very important for the BRICS countries, who cover 40 per cent of the world’s population. We are committed to creating cooperation, coordination and communication among the stakeholders, for the future development of the transport sector. This proposal will bring a lot of new innovations in the transport sector.” This indicates technology and innovation. I thank everyone who has contributed to this mission.

Preparation before the ministers’ meeting

The 3rd BRICS Transport Working Group Senior Officials Meeting under India’s BRICS 2026 Chairmanship began in Nagpur on July 9, where senior officials and representatives of member countries came together to enhance cooperation in sustainable transport, resilience and innovation ahead of the Transport Ministers’ Meeting. The three-day deliberations focused on strengthening transport connectivity, sustainable mobility, logistics, digitalization and infrastructure development among the BRICS countries.

Emphasis on implementing mutual consent

On Friday, the head of the Indonesian delegation and Indonesia’s Consul General in Mumbai, Eddy Wordoyo, described the discussions as “very fruitful” and expressed confidence that its outcome would benefit all BRICS member states. He stressed the importance of implementing the agreements reached during the meeting rather than limiting cooperation to mere MoUs.

India’s chairmanship and expansion of BRICS

India’s BRICS chairmanship in 2026 is the fourth after 2012, 2016 and 2021. It is being organized under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability”, reflecting a people-centric and humanity-first approach. BRICS currently comprises 11 emerging economies, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, and serves as a platform for cooperation on global political, economic and development issues.
